So, I have been Facebook-free for about a week and a half now... a lot of people have been asking how it is going. I am very happy to report that it has been awesome. While I miss knowing what everyone is up to I am loving actually TALKING to people about what is going on in their lives. Truly, it has been a beautiful thing.
I also love the freedom of not feeling the "need" to check Facebook or sit there and scroll through to see what everyone is up to. I do have a lot more time on my hands and it is nice!
One thing I hadn't realized until giving up Facebook is how often after checking Facebook I would be left feeling frustrated or cranky about something I read, and in some ways it would kind of ruin my day. Maybe it would be a picture of a bunch of people at a big get-together I wasn't invited to, or pictures of a friend's amazing vacation that I could never afford, or someone complaining about their husband (one of my biggest pet-peeves) and it was all effecting me more than I realized! So, there has been a lot of freedom in getting away from that.
I have said it before and I know I will say it again. Facebook is awesome for most people. It just wasn't being awesome in my life... at least right now. I know a lot of my friends said that giving up Facebook is something they have seriously considered and I would encourage anyone to at least give it a try!
My absolute favorite part has just been enhancing my real life relationships with people (which sounds so silly to say after just a little over a week, but seriously!). It is so much more fun to hear good news from my friends in person or even over the phone than just generically on Facebook. And I especially have been guilty of sharing good news on Facebook instead of telling my close friends personally. So, because of that I won't be posting a gender reveal here on the blog, at least for awhile. I am excited to tell people in person, or over the phone or even through a personal text. It is just more fun that way.
I am still a huge fan of social media (obviously, I have a blog!) but I think we all have to use it in a way that fits best into our own lives. For me, right now, I find my blog and a few other great blogs, Instagram (my username is KATIERAMSEY) and Pinterest to all be fun ways to connect, learn, and be inspired and encouraged. They just fit right now. And I am sure that will change and evolve as my life changes and evolves.
And I have to say "thank you" so much to all of you that read this silly little blog. I am so encouraged when I get e-mails or messages from you all. I hope somehow this blog is encouraging to someone... but if it isn't, you all encourage me!
Good work friend! Now on to the next dilemma... what were you doing blogging at 3:00 am?!! :-)
ReplyDeleteHey, Katie :) I just saw that you were forgoing facebook for a while. I know how much I enjoy checking in on how things are going with you and your lovely family (both on facebook and on here), so I thought you might want to know that I had my baby on October 6. We decided we wanted to be surprised about the gender, and it was wonderful--Matt got to announce, "It's a girl!" Her name is Kate Virginia. I don't really do a blog, but I have a shutterfly page (mattandmallory.shutterfly.com) that's password protected, so if you want to see some pictures, let me know and I can email you the password. I saw that you weren't feeling well, so I hope you get to feeling better soon. Pregnant and sick is no fun!
