The one on {Marriage}

Those of you who have read this blog for a little while have probably noticed one thing about me... I tend to gush about my hubs a little bit. It might be a touch annoying, but, I promise you one thing, it isn't just for show. The hubs really is my absolute favorite. But, it isn't just because of his hunky good looks or the fact that he makes me laugh so hard I can't stop crying (although those are certainly perks). The hubs is my absolute favorite person because I intentionally make sure of it.

Moms live in a dangerous world where kids can quickly become the center of everything. Date nights are replaced by family movie nights and weekends away are exchanged for a family trip. And, that is to be expected to some degree. But, at the same time, we need to be protecting our marriages and making them our #1 priority. It isn't easy, but I believe with all of my heart that it is the best gift I can give to my kiddos. Marriages are forever, our kiddos are with us for just a short time.

I am by no means a marriage expert. I have been married 7 short years. But, I feel that I have learned a lot in those years and am happy to pass on any wisdom I might have started to attain!

In my life, practically, making my marriage a priority looks like, making sure that at least once or twice a year we get away overnight together. Even if it is just for a night (it usually is). I also try to make sure we get at least one date out once a month. It can be hard (and we are super blessed to have my amazing parents who are willing to watch the kiddos), but try to find a way to make it work. That time out, out of the house, not in your mom/dad roles can be such a sweet time in marriage and can really build your relationship up. It also says to each other, and to our kiddos that our marriage is a high priority. And hopefully, will teach our kids to do the same in their own marriages. Life is stressful, kids are a handful, and housework never stops. Get away from it all and focus on each other. I always come back totally revitalized and remembering "why" I do it all everyday. After our little date day on Saturday I have seriously had Super Woman energy around my house!

We also try to have a date night in at least once a week. We try to make this different from a normal night where we might be getting some stuff done or sitting watching a show together. A lot of times we will feed the kids early and then get take-out after they are in bed. We usually have a little picnic at our coffee table and talk and then play a board game or watch a movie together. This regular time is awesome. If the week is getting crazy and life is feeling out of control I can look forward to that night to talk to the hubs and I always know I will walk away feeling all better. We also make sure to tell our kids when we are having date night in. They know that this is special time for Mommy and Daddy.

Other ways that I make my husband my favorite person is by constantly pursuing our relationship. I do everything I can to avoid "room mate mode" (or friend mode). I have found that pursuing my husband probably does more for me than it does for him (although I think he likes it!). It keeps my heart focused... and love flows out from there. Here are some silly things I do (I am sad the hubs reads my blog and I am letting all of my secrets out! Ha!)

  • I try to plan at least one or two dinners a week that I think the hubs will love. (And if the kids hate it, it is just one more way to show them that they are not the center of the world!)
  • I e-mail, text, or call my husband at least once a day to let him know I love him, I am thinking of him, I miss him, or I appreciate him (or honestly, something less appropriate... just keepin' it real)
  • I try to look nice when he gets home. Not really because he doesn't think I look great in sweats and no make-up, but making an effort to be loving towards someone else does more for you than them.
  • When I do my husband's laundry or something else for him I use that as an opportunity to pray for him. Whenever I am hanging up his work shirts I am thinking God for how hard he works for our family.
  • I let things go (I am really learning on this one). Every once in awhile he will say something that hurts my feelings, or annoys me, or something along those lines... It happens! When possible, I let it go! I don't say anything, take a deep breath, and the moment is over! 99% of the time I know he didn't mean anything by what he said and it came out wrong or was me being sensitive. Avoid an argument and let it go!
  • I try to only speak highly of my husband (thankfully, he makes it easy). But, a wife complaining about her husband usually ends up just hardening her heart towards her husband, and honestly, it makes her look bad.

I am blessed to have a wonderful marriage. But, we have definitely had our hard times. And I have no doubt we will walk through more. But, doing my part to make my marriage great and a priority is all I can do. And never underestimate the impact that simply changing your own heart can have!

I love you because...

I am very thankful for my amazing husband and had been wanting to think of new ways to let him know just how studly I think he is.
I saw this idea on Pinterest and thought it would be fun to recreate it for myself. I stuck one of these babies in a frame, grabbed a dry erase marker and put it on our bathroom counter right by where the hubs shaves off his mountain man beard and brushes his pearly whites. That way he will see it every day. And of course I wanted the first message to really catch his attention...
But, seriously, this is a great place for me to let my favorite guy know just how much he means to me and how thankful I am for how he serves our family.
P.S. If you don't want to make your own I will happily e-mail you the one I made in Word and then you can pop it into your favorite frame. Just shoot me an e-mail at KatieLRamsey(at)gmail(dot)com.

My very own Valentine

Valentine's Day always takes a back seat in this house to my birthday! However, I couldn't let today go by without giving a shout out to my very own Valentine... the hubs.

My top 5 favorite things about Nick Ramsey....
5. He is bald. I love it. I think it is hot.
4. He makes me laugh all the time and is the funniest person I know.
3. He is an amazing dad and strives to be better all the time. He truly has a heart to love and serve our family.
2. He is my best friend. There is no one I would rather hang out with... and I seriously get excited everyday when he calls and says he is on his way home from work.
1. He loves Jesus and truly has a heart to live a life that glorifies God. I am inspired by Nick's attitude towards service and his heart for others.

I love you, Babe! There is no one I would rather live this crazy life with!

My Big Loser

I am pretty jealous proud of my husband. He has lost about 65 pounds over the past year! I can hardly recognize him in old pictures anymore. Here are a few older ones...

And here is a little before and after. (He isn't mad in the second one... we were being "silly"... apparently he thinks that is a silly face... I don't know... )
Nick was so sweet and gained weight with me during all of my pregnancies! I mean, the couple that snacks together stays together, right? No? Hmmm... Well, here are a few more current photos...

Doesn't he look great? I hate to say it but Nick lost the weight by exercising and eating right. He didn't do anything gimmicky at all. I watched. I should have joined in! Because now that my husband has reached his goal weight I feel a little more of a drive to get to mine.

Hallellujah

This weekend was amazing. I know I say that a lot because we have a lot of fun around here. But, this weekend was truly special. My husband was baptized this weekend at our church. It was something I know I will never ever forget. It was also very special to have some of our family there with us!
Nick was baptized as a little kid but it wasn't out of a decision to follow Christ but in a "everyone else is doing it I guess I should too" kind of way. Over the past few years Nick has really grown as a follwer and believer of Jesus. He has questioned the decision on weather to be rebaptized a lot and this weekend decided to go for it.
He knew that he didn't need to be rebaptized for salvation. We believe that you do not have to be baptized at all for salvation. But, it is an act of obedience to Christ and a public way of professing your own death and resurrection in Jesus.
As his wife it has been truly increadible to watch Jesus transforming my husband. God's hand on Nick's life has been nothing short of a miracle and to get to be a part of that has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life.
Watching my husband be baptized was one of the most thrilling experiences of my entire life. To have watched him line his life up with Christ and then to get to see him take this step was amazing.
I am so thankful for my husband. He is an amazing leader for our family. I am thankful that he has willingly put himself under the Lordship of Christ and I see how much it is blessing him and our entire family. But, mostly I am thankful to God. He has been so faithful and the way he has transformed my husband is beyond what I ever could have asked for.

How to get your husband to watch The Bachlorette: {Part 3}

I really need to come up with a new name for this series. The plan was to come up with really yummy foods to intice the hubs to watch trashy television with me. But, it turns out... (sorry to throw you under the bus here, Babe) that it doesn't take much inticing to get him to watch this particular show with me. Infact, I think he is a little more into it than I am. But, I digress... I think he was so excited for date night in tonight that he brought these babies home...
To quote my favorite commerical for Laughing Cow Cheese, "The hubs. He's good" True story!

But, I was NOT a slacker this week. I really brought my A game this week. I made my man homemade pizza and served it with beer. Big points for the wife I think!

And in my {humble} opinion it was the BEST pizza I have ever had. Pink Pistachio came through for me again this week (she also did for Part 1). I combined two of her recipes to make this delish homemade pizza... well, almost homemade. Thank you Rohdes dough for the crust!
Delish! So, here is how I made it. I made these marinated tomatoes and I had some of these meatballs leftover. I added some sliced provel cheese to the top and a little fresh grated Parmesan and fresh basil and popped this baby into the oven for about 25 minutes. There was SO much flavor!
and yep... here is the after...
And if you were wondering how the hubs REALLY felt about it...
I guess that is a "thank you very much"! Hehe. I love date nights in with my man.

Fabulous Fathers' Day and {Red Velvet Waffles Recipe}

So, how do you celebrate someone who gives you so much? It is a CHALLENGE let me tell you.  I have to stop and {gush} about how wonderful the hubs is. He is such a wonderful husband and dad. He takes such good care of us. And he is super fun! The perfect combo!

So... when it came to celebrating such an awesome guy I had to do some thinking. At first everything that came to my mind was things that I would like to do. But, I wanted Father's Day to be about {him}! So... I thought, what is one of the hubs favorite things to do that we don't always get to do? And then it hit me! He loves getting to spend the day totally at home, just playing. He also loves home cooked meals. My man does not like eating out (I know! So weird, right?)... I am going to pretend it is because his wife is such a FABULOUS cook! ;) But, I decided to spoil him with home cooked meals all day.

Breakfast was red velvet waffles with cream cheese frosting on top! For lunch we had homemade potato chips and sandwiches on fococia bread. And for dinner I combined the hubs two favorite foods- sausage and black beans! I will post the soup recipe later this week! It was delish and easy and actually super healthy!

But, I couldn't wait to post the recipe for the red velvet waffles! They were so delish and pretty! I think they would be great for Valentine's Day or even Christmas with their deep red color!

Happy Father's Day

In honor of Father's Day I decided to ask the two older kiddos about their Daddy!

I asked the kiddos...

What is your favorite thing to do with Daddy?
"Put him in the carseat box"- Max
"Jump on him" -Max
"Porcupine" - Sophie (who obviously did not understand the assignment)

What do you like best about Daddy?
"He's funny!" - Max
"I want to share Max's fruit snacks" - Sophie (again... there was a communication problem here)

Well... I tried!

But we DO love our Daddy around here! Just this morning when Sophie came downstairs we had this little conversation...
Sophie: "Where is Daddy?"
Me: "He is in the shower"
Sophie: "Really? I like him. He is my favorite Daddy. He is actually my father!"

Lots of love! :)
